This summer, 12 students from the MakeME Academy embarked on an exciting journey of learning and professional development through a two-week intensive course at NWRC Springtown. The programme was designed to immerse students in the dynamic world of manufacturing and engineering, offering them hands-on experience across a wide range of cutting-edge technologies and industry practices.
The course covered key areas such as robotics and automation, 3D printing, production and manufacturing, digital fabrication, and lean manufacturing, among others. Throughout the programme, students developed practical skills, built confidence, and deepened their understanding of the sector—equipping them with knowledge that will support their future career choices.
Following the classroom-based training, students had the privilege of participating in work experience placements with leading companies in their local area. Over the next two weeks, they were welcomed by GE Spares, AE Global, The LYCRA Company, Flemings, and Hunter, where they gained invaluable insights into real-world operations and had the chance to learn directly from industry professionals.
These placements allowed students to apply their newly acquired skills in authentic workplace settings, deepen their understanding of the sector, and begin building professional networks. For many, it was a transformative experience that helped clarify their career aspirations and opened their eyes to the diverse opportunities available within engineering and manufacturing.
