We were delighted to invite the MakeME Academy students for an evening event where we talked about all the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for them. Parents were also invited to come along.

The group met who Leanne who works closely with many apprentices on their education journey and were given an interesting tour by John Cartin. Everyone was particularly impressed with the Electro Vehicle Training facility.

The group will take part in company visits and activities with their partnered company; have “experience days” at UU and NWRC where the students will participate in practical activities in areas including mechanical engineering and robotics; they will also work together to raise some money for a group trip to Todd’s Leap; they will develop their technical skills and in particular look at their “personal brand”. Finally they will have a MakeME Graduation hosted in the Guildhall and attended by the Mayor.

Following the MakeME Academy, this group of 20 students will be offered the fantastic opportunity to embark on a 5 week advanced manufacturing Academy programme, funded as part of the Labour Market Partnership within Derry City & Strabane District Council. This programme will enable the students to participate in 3 weeks of practical learning in relation to manufacturing and engineering, followed by a two-week placement with their partner company.

Exciting times ahead!
